In New Zealand we’re lucky. We have a free health system (well, mostly free). By world standards, our healthcare provision is excellent. In general, we know if something goes wrong, we’ll be in safe hands.
But unfortunately, we also have a stretched healthcare system.
Right now there are 270,000 people on waiting lists around the country.
The thing with Life Insurance is the premiums increase every year. Yes, it’s a fact.
The reason is, as you get older your chances of dying increase. The insurer is taking on more risk – so
they increase your premium to cover that risk.
Because of this increasing risk, traditional stepped premiums start off cheaper but increase every year as you get older.
If so, you’re not alone – because the big C ranks as Kiwis’ number one health concern.
But thankfully, medical developments are improving the odds everyday. Drugs like Keytruda – a drug which unleashes the body’s immune system to fight melanoma, are having some amazing results.
But unfortunately many of these new (and very expensive) drugs are not funded by Pharmac.
When you’re young, fit and healthy, you don’t tend to think about being any other way. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you, the world is your oyster, the sky’s the limit (you get my drift).
